چکیده

INTRODUCTION Sleep apnea syndrome (SA) is a common breathing disorder that affects 5% of the North American adult population, with men being affected almost twice as much as women [1]. The condition has well defined associations with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, arrhythmia, daytime hypersomnolence, motor vehicle accidents and neurocognitive dysfunction; but despite this it is grossly under-diagnosed [2-8].

Cardiac arrhythmias, snoring, and sleep apnea.

We investigated the frequency of cardiac arrhythmias in patients suspected of having sleep apnea, and related them to the severity of apnea, snoring, and nocturnal hypoxemia. We prospectively studied 458 patients who had nocturnal polysomnography which included objective measurement of snoring (quantified by the number of snores per hour of sleep [snoring index (SI)] and maximum nocturnal sound...

Relation of Cardiac Arrhythmias to Hypoxic Time and Lowest Oxygen Saturation in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea in an Asian Context: A Singapore Sleep Centre Study.

Dear Editor, The association between cardiac arrhythmias and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is well established.1-5 Both conditions lead to significant morbidity and mortality if left untreated.6 Recurrent episodes of apnoea, hypoxaemia and hypercapnia in patients with OSA lead to chemoreceptor excitation, increased sympathetic drive and cardiac arrhythmias.7-9 Given the crucial role of oxygen ...

Obstructive sleep apnea and its relationship to cardiac arrhythmias.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects approximately 4% of middle-aged men and 2% of middle-aged women. Cardiac arrhythmias are common problems in patients with OSA, even though the true prevalence and clinical relevance of cardiac arrhythmias remains to be determined. The presence and complexity of both tachyarrhythmias and bradyarrhythmias may influence morbidity, mortality, and the quality of...

Sleep-disordered breathing and cardiac arrhythmias.

Over the past few years sleep-disordered breathing has been identified as an important factor in arrhythmogenesis and a potential target of therapy to prevent cardiac arrhythmias in selected patients. In this review we highlight the role of obstructive sleep apnea and Cheyne-Stokes respiration in the pathophysiology of arrhythmias, address their clinical effect in supraventricular and ventricul...

Severe nocturnal cardiac arrhythmias caused by sleep apnea-induced hypoxemia in males

Nocturnal cardiac arrhythmias (NCA) were analyzed in patients with sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) and controls. Occurrence and severity of NCA were compared in 33 SAHS patients and 16 control subjects, matched for cardiovascular risk factors. Continuous overnight polysomnography provided ECG, respiratory and sleep parameters for a comparative analysis. Various types and severity of NCA we...

Sleep with the Rhythm of your Heart

Arrhythmias during sleep are often detected on routine cardiac monitoring. Specialist cardiology opinion and input is often sought in order to assess whether nocturnal arrhythmias are clinically relevant or not. For the most part, bradyarrhythmias in the young fit individual are a variation of normal and require no further investigations. However even in normal sleep there are cardiovascular di...
